Kalimegdan fortress and park overlooking the river Sava and across the river a part of Belgrade called, New Belgrade. Not far from there the rivers Sava and Danube merge which can also be viewed from the park. The fortress is over a thousand years old and had defended Belgrade and Serbia in countless wars over the centuries. The statue is called, The Victor. It is a man holding a sword in one hand and a dove of peace in the other. Interestingly it is facing the West, a direction from which Serbia was attacked time after time and as recently as 1999 when it was bombed by NATO (Photograph used with permission of copyright holder Aleksandar Cosic.
